Puri uppittu/ Puffed rice upma

Puri uppittu is also known as mandakki oggarane, uggani, pori upma, murmura upma in different parts of Karnataka. It is basically Karnataka style recipe. It can be served for BREAKFAST, BRUNCH or as EVENING SNACK. 

Many street foods are prepared using puffed rice bhel puri, tikki puri, churmuri. In Northern parts of Karnataka Puri uppittu is mainly known as mandakki oggarane and served as street food with Mirchi bajji. 
It tastes very good when it's hot and spicy. 

And also puri uppittu gets ready within 15-20 minutes.


1. Puffed rice/Puri - 5 big cups
2. Oil - 3 tablespoon
3. Bengal gram - 1 tablespoon
4. Urad daal - 1 tablespoon
5. Onion ( chopped) - 3
6. Curry leaves - 2 tablespoon
7. Green chilli - 10-12
8. Coriander leaves ( chopped) - 1/2 cup
9. Coconut ( grated) - 1 cup
10. Fried gram powder - 4 Table spoon
11. Lemon juice - 2 table spoon
12. Mustard - 1 teaspoon


1.  Rinse the puffed rice thoroughly and soak in water  for 4-5 minutes.
2.  In a pan add oil, mustard and let it splutter.
3.  Then add bengal gram, urad daal and fry them for 1-2 minutes.
4.  Add onion, curry leaves and green chilli and saute it until the onion turns golden brown color.
5.  Meanwhile, squeeze off all the water from the puffed rice.
6.  Add the puffed rice into the pan and give it a good mix.
7.  Now add fried gram powder and mix it evenly.
8.  Fry the whole mixture for 3-4 minutes.
9.  Turn off the stove and Add coriander leaves, grated coconut and lemon juice.
10.  Mix well and serve hot.


1. Fried gram powder is the taste enhancer.
2. More the onions, more tastier.
3. You can also add turmeric if you like.
