Sambar powder

Sambar powder can be used for many recipes. Instead of using chilly powder along with dhaniya powder and all that, you can simply add this sambar powder.


1. Byadagi Chilly – 500g

2. Guntur Chilly – 100g

3. Coriander seeds – 250g

4. Bengal gram – 100g

5. Urad daal – 70g

6. fenugreek/ Menthya – 30g

7. Cinnamon – 5g

8. Poppy seeds – 3 Table spoon

9. Jeera – 3 Table spoon

10. Asafoetida – 1 Tea spoon

11. Curry leaves – 1/2 wisp

Procedure for making sambar powder:

1. In a pan, add 2 Table spoon oil, bengal gram, urad daal, fenugreek/menthya, Cinnamon.

2. Fry until the bengal gram turns golden brown.

3. Add coriander seeds and Curry leaves. Fry until Curry leaves becomes roasted.

4. Add both the types of dry chillies and give it a nice fry such that chilly becomes completely roasted.

5. Turn off the gas and add poppy seeds, jeera and asafoetida and give it a mix.

6. Once it cools down, grind it into a fine powder in a mixer.


1. While frying chillies, add a handful of salt so that there will be no pungent smell of chillies.

2. Always add the same amount of poppy seeds and jeera.
